Practise Makes Perfect
Part of living in the right standing with God is putting off your old self. So when Paul (the writer of the book Ephesians) tells us to put off our old apparel, he wasn’t just talking about the routine of changing clothes for the day. He was more emphasizing the responsible action of our former behaviours that were indicative to our old lifestyle that aligns to darkness and fear instead of love. (Eph 5:8)
STEP 1 – This is your next step in living righteously. Let us make a list of behaviours Paul instruct us to put off. Please write this in your Prayer Journal.
- Ephesians 4:25………….
- Ephesians 4:26………….
- Ephesians 4:28………….
- Ephesians 4:29………….
- Ephesians 4:31…………..
- Ephesians 5:3-5…………
STEP 2 – Now circle any of the behaviours in the list that you struggle with to put off.
And trust me I know its difficult, because I struggle to throw clothes out of my cupboard that is so outdated and old and worn, I have no business wearing them any longer. I struggle to throw them out, because they fit me so well, or they are just so comfy.
Sometimes lifestyle choices and habits are the same. You may have indulged in pride and anger for so long, it actually became a comfortable outfit for you. BUT that is symbolic of your old lifestyle, your old character. Putting it off daily won’t be easy, but with the help of this challenge and Gods spirit it can be done.
STEP 3 – Consider the behaviour you circled just a few minutes ago, what comfort or benefit do they give you that makes it difficult for you to part from it? Write in your Prayer Journal.
What detriments did the behaviour bring to your life?
What would be your 1st step you could take this week to put them off?
Wearing the breast plate of righteousness means putting off your old behaviours and putting on your new self.
STEP 4 – Complete the following verse… Ephesians 4:24…
Put on the new self, created after the…
Practical righteousness involves both putting off and putting on. This is the breastplate of righteousness. Do you mind if I say that again – we put on the breastplate of righteousness by making a conscious decision and a firm, consistent resolve to cast off the darkness and put on the armor of light.
When you choose practical righteousness it places a blockade between the enemy and the area he targets so often – your heart.
Put off.. put on.. makes me think of that movie, Karate Kid… “wax on, wax off”. But I know what you are thinking, “Clauds if only it was that easy”, right?
